A Mumbai to Bengaluru IndiGo flight (6E 565) returned to the financial capital after pilots declared a full emergency shortly after taking off last night.
The emergency was declared due to an engine failure, news agency ANI reported. There were around 180 passengers on board the aircraft at the time of the incident.
Once the flight landed safely at the Mumbai airport at around midnight, an alternate aircraft pressed into service to ferry the passengers to Bengaluru.
IndiGo 6E 565 flies between Mumbai and Bengaluru. It usually takes off at around 10:30 pm and lands in Bengaluru just after midnight.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has taken notice of the incident and is investigating it.
The 6E 565 route is usually flown by an Airbus A320 aircraft, according to tracking portal flightradar24.com. The flight that suffered the engine failure yesterday landed in Bengaluru at 2:03 am today, according to the portal.
